A ball valve is a type of vacuum valve that is durable and usually achieves perfect closure. The sphere  is located in the center portion of the valve and the sphere controls the flow through the valve.  There is a hole or port in the center of the sphere, and when the port is in line with the ends of the  valve, flow is created. Thus, flow is created when the port is aligned with the valve ends. When the  valve is closed, the hole is perpendicular to the valve ends and flow is blocked. When the valve is  closed, the handle or lever will align with the port position, allowing you to "see" the valve position.  When the valve is fully open, you can "see" the position of the valve.

Both ball and butterfly valves are part of the rotary tongue valve series. They belong to the series of  rotary tongue valves. Ball valves are simple, robust and highly reliable in vacuum applications with  contaminated conditions.
